The model presented here is a work-in-progress, far from implementation. the main problem is how to formalize relevant notions for modelling play, such as enjoyment, behavioral flexibility, commitment, without losing key features of the phenomenon. my research has no definite answer to this problem. nonetheless, i consider cognitive modelling of play a relevant task, that needs not only formalization, but also basic theoretical analyses. without such analyses, we would not know what we need to formalize, and formalization itself would be pointless. in my view, the main goal now is to develop dynamic simulations of play acitivities, no matter how much simplified, provided basic features are maintained. it is time to start considering what formal language could be better in modelling play. recently, a conversation with johan van benthem gave me new suggestion on this matter: not surprisingly, game logic seems to be good in modelling play. there is no time and space here to detail the game logic developed by van benthem and colleagues in the last five years van benthem, 2001; van benthem, dekker, van eijck, de rijke & venema, 2002; van benthem & ter meulen, 1997 ; . i will only present a couple of its possible applications in modelling play, by way of tentative suggestions in this new direction. first of all, game logic is good in modelling strategical interaction, being created also not only ; to this purpose. at the same time, game logic is richer than game theory in mathematics and economics, expecially from a psychological viewpoint. for instance, game logic has developed a precise distinction between action preferences and outcome preferences: this had never been considered in game theory, but it is absolutely relevant for cognitive modelling e.g. to distinguish, for the same outcome, utilitarian inclination i.e. getting the maximum results ; from a moral-oriented behavior i.e. doing some action for the sake of the action itself ; . such distinction can be also relevant for play activities, in which players can be either outcome-oriented or performance-oriented, doing some action for the intrinsic beauty of it and consider also the well-known issue of "fair-play"! ; . furthermore, game logic could provide a formal solution to a classical problem in play psychology: the old, misleading distinction between make-believe play and games with rules, which dates from piaget 1932; 1945 ; . basic assumption was that symbolic play in animals and young children differs from typical adult games e.g. cards games ; in the absence presence of rules. in short, piaget considered symbolic play as not having precise rules, in opposition to adult games, characterized by formal set of rules. vygotskij 1966.
